These days, it seems like there are a thousand and one different ways to treat ailments. It’s safe to say that Western medical techniques are no longer the only thing people look towards when it comes to treatments. Alternative health practices such as yoga and acupuncture are gaining more and more popularity. Today, I’m here to tell you about the practice of aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is a practice that uses essential oils to promote healing. It has been used for thousands of years. Cleopatra is even famous for using them for ailments, perfumes and beauty. Essential oils are made from concentrated extracts from the roots, leaves, seeds, and blossoms of plants. These oils can be inhaled, massaged into the skin, or ingested by mouth in some rare cases. While more research needs to be done, aromatherapy is thought to reduce pain, depression and anxiety.
Now, you may be wondering how the use of simple oils has anything to do with you and your busy life as a college student. If you keep reading you’ll find a list of struggles we all go through, and how they can be relieved with the use of oils!
For Studying and Concentration
We’ve all been there… staying up all night, cramming for an exam. Or maybe you have attempting to study, only to have your mind wonder to anything but the task at hand. Oils that can help with concentration and focus include rosemary, peppermint, eucalyptus, lemon, and Siberian fir. Try adding a few drops of these oils to a room diffuser, using a room spray, or sniffing from a nasal inhaler.
For Those Pesky 8 am Classes
Citrus oils like lime, lemon and grapefruit mix well with oils such as peppermint, spearmint or laurel leaf. Citrusy aromas are a perfect pick me up especially for this time of year when the weather is grey and dreary.
For Destroying Dorm Room Germs
Let’s face it. College can be a gross environment sometimes. With hundreds of kids sharing a living space, it can feel like the germs are just everywhere. The good thing about essential oils is that they all help build immunity. However it is suggested to use tea tree, lemongrass, peppermint, lemon, or sweet orange for specifically cleaning and killing germs. Try adding oils to a glass spray bottle for wiping down surfaces or adding a few drops to castile soap and baking soda to make a soft scrub.
For Beauty and Skin Care
With all of the stressors we face, sometimes our skin can go a little haywire. For breakouts and acne add tea tree or cypress oil to a carrier oil such as coconut oil or jojoba wax. For dry skin (it’s almost winter people!) frankincense or palma rosa can help soften things up. Finally, for oily skin try lemon oil.
Last but not least… For De-stressing and Relaxation
Ahh yes…one of the most important things we can do for ourselves here at school. RELAX. If you need some serious de-stressing look into lavender, chamomile, cedar wood, rosewood, sweet orange, grapefruit, and frankincense. Add these to a diffuser or a relaxing bubble bath, get a room spray or massage or add to unscented soap for a nice and long hot shower.
