As warm weather approaches and plants and flowers begin to grow, you may begin to experience symptoms of seasonal allergies. We all know that uncomfortable combination of sneezing, a runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, coughing, congestion and then some.  Multiple things like spores, mold, ragweed, and pollen can cause allergies. During the spring season, the most common cause of allergies is pollen. Pollen can come from several different plants in our area, and the most common plants are: trees, grass, weeds, and flowers.

Soo…If allergens are everywhere, what should I do to manage it?

In case you are one of the unlucky people susceptible to these allergies, here are some things you can do to help control your allergies during this season.

Keep doors and windows shut in your car and/or home. This can help reduce the amount of pollen you are exposed to throughout the day.

Check pollen counts. During each season certain allergen levels are higher at different parts of the day. Typically, during the spring and early summer, the highest level for pollen is in the evening. Closer to fall, it begins to change and the highest level for allergens then are seen in the early morning. You can check pollen counts in your area here!

Take frequent showers, and change clothes after being outside. To minimize your allergy symptoms, it is best to reduce the amount of pollen you track in on your body. Pollen can be taken in through various parts of your body, since it is an airborne allergen. It is important to wash your hands often, and be careful not to touch your face when outside during high pollen times.

Keep a dehumidifier in your bedroom. This can help reduce the amount of pollen and other airborne allergens in your air when you are inside. It can also improve sleep when dealing with allergies.

If your allergy symptoms become intolerable, it would be best to make an appointment with your doctor and be referred to an allergist. They can determine your exact allergies. From there you can be treated with different medications, or be put on a treatment plan that can help your allergies long term.
